Now Accepting Applications For JACK Studio Readings

Application is free and open to all, regardless of geographic location. Selected artists will have existing works for string quartet read by the JACK Quartet. The quartet will offer feedback and make professional audio and video documentation to be used by the composers for academic and professional applications as well as non-commercial promotion.

The reading sessions will happen in December 2025 in New York City. They will be open to the public, and composers may attend in-person or virtually.

Violist John Richards performs JACK Studio artist Michele Cheng’s piece “Jaack” (2023), a world premiere that featured the four quartet members, four hand-made puppets, video score, interactive visual arts, AI generated images, a custom smart mirror, and structured improvisation performed by JACK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You must submit a PDF of your string quartet score in order to be eligible for a reading. This score can be notated however you’d like. If you do not have a completed string quartet, we encourage you to apply for Studio’s two-year artist residency when that application opens in Fall 2025.

  • For reading: work sample must be a completed string quartet.

    For residency application: work samples that show your musical interests, and particularly your use of string instruments, are recommended.

    Work samples can be links to PDFs, streaming audio recordings, or video (Google, SoundCloud, DropBox, etc). A reminder: Please edit the share settings on any files so that we can open them!

  • You can apply for both a reading and a residency if you wish. Applicants will only be accepted for one program, not both.

  • JACK has worked with many composers who have devised their own styles of notation, and we’re excited to experiment with graphic scores, improvisation, and text-based directions.

  • No! There are no educational requirements for this application.

  • Due to the high number of applications each year, we do not accept letters of recommendation or references.

  • The application to JACK Studio Readings is due by 11:59pm ET on September 15, 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.
